Manti.. It Will Blow Your Mind

..but not how you think..
Last night,

the girlies and I headed south - for

The Mormon Miracle Pageant

{or, as we call it, the Manti Pageant}

I will admit..

I love this show..

I know it can be corny and outdated in parts..

But I have to say,

when it comes down to it..

This thing always reaffirms my testimony..

{I even get a little teary a couple times}

Interesting tidbits..

We picked a great night to go..

that^^ was taken right in front of our seats..

front row..

and we didn't pull in until 6:30

We didn't even have anyone sit next to us until about 9:15

{and it starts at 9:30}

We got to talking to a man in a wheelchair

who has worked the pageant for 11 years with his parents..

In fact,

his parents run the "lost & found"

{as in lost children}

He told us one year a little boy was brought to them

at 6:30 PM..

The parents didn't notice he was missing until they got home..

To Orem..

WHAT??

AND that when they picked him up

{at approximately 3:00 AM}

his mother's only question was

"did he get to see the pageant?"

They didn't even thank them..

The other story he told was similar..

The family noticed their son

{one of 7}

was missing when they got home to Salt Lake..

They proceeded to call the Manti Police Department

and asked if they

{the police}

could keep the 4 year old overnight..

The police said they would,

but they would be arrested..

So they grudgingly headed back to Manti to pick up their son..

This boggles my mind in sooooo many ways..

Where do I start??

Discuss..

Adeline Awarded!!

K..

This post is overdue..

{but it seems to me,
a majority of mine are..}

On the last day of Second Grade,

Miss Adi's class had an awards ceremony..

She got a few..

Our Amazing Arizona {and Utah, and Colorado} Adventure!! part 6

June 5, 2010

After spending the night in Moab
{no, we've never been there, either}

..we headed to Arches National Park
to do some hiking!!

Before it got too hot,
we made our way up to Delicate Arch..

At the trailhead..

Beginning the trek..

Up the slick rock!!

waiting in "line" for our picture..

We did it!!

On our way back..

Chelsea & Adi got waaaaay ahead..

"little" cuties!

Next we chose an easier hike,
to Landscape Arch..

{by now it was 96 degrees!!}

This is the 2nd longest arch in the world!

At one point,
it is only 6 feet thick!

We didn't take any pictures,
but shortly after heading back,
Savannah took a big tumble!

Here's Adi waiting patiently
while we clean her up!

Back at the Visitor's Center..

That's my girls..
You made it!!

The trip is over!!

Super fun way to spend a week with my wonderful family..

But I've seen enough rock formations to last me a good, long time..

Mesa Verde National Park..

I have to say, I wasn't sure how I felt about this one..

I mostly thought it would be boring..

BOY, I was wrong..

This was MY FAVORITE..

In fact, I'm pretty sure it was everyone's favorite!!
Spruce Tree House

One of the "self-guided" tours..

..just grinding some corn..

Apparently, the Anasazi Indians lived here between 1200-1300 BC

Apparently, the term Anasazi now has negative connotations.. {?}

So, now at Mesa Verde they are referred to as Ancient Puebloans..

{doesn't that roll of the tongue..}

Descending into a KIVA..
A Kiva is something else we heard a lot about..

A Kiva is a religious structure,

but was also used as a winter dwelling..
In fact, the number of Kivas in a cliff dwelling

helped archaeologists determine how many people

lived in each dwelling..

Do you feel educated now??

Inside the Kiva
Our flash worked really well,
because it was quite dark..

Heading out..

Cliff Palace

Our first guided tour..

The overlook above Cliff Palace..

Looking down from the overlook..

Starting the tour..
{yes, it was very steep}

and now back UP a ladder to get there!

waiting for the rest of our group..

We were on ladders all the time!

getting a closer look!

climbing back up the cliff face..

and more ladders!!
Balcony House

This is considered the "Adventure Tour" of Mesa Verde..

In fact, they kind of try to talk you out of it..

Because once you go through the gate, you are committed!!

{NO turning back..}

We went down a huge set of "stairs"

to this "seep stream"

{their water source}

See the ladder to the left??
double wide, 32 feet high

UP WE GO!!

Through the rocks..

The overlook from Balcony House..

See the grooves Adi is walking in?
These, along with ladders, are how
the Ancient Puebloans got up & down
the cliffs..

They made everything work..
No matter where the boulders were!

This was a 12 foot long,
3 foot tall hole you HAD to make it through..

No problem for the girlies..

I took video..

Davy considered being air-lifted out..
{he's a little claustrophobic!!}

Woo-hoo Davy!!
He was very proud of himself..

{But he kept dreaming that night
that he was getting stuck in the hole!!}

Literally up the cliff!!

But first, this ladder!!
{short, compared to what we were used to!!}

This "video-ing while climbing"
wasn't my best idea...

Now up one more ladder!!

Square Tower
{you can't get down to this one..}

On the other side of the canyon from Cliff Palace..
{Click on this picture, you'll see it!!}

Hard at work on their Junior Ranger Badges!

These are not easy!!

The Sun Temple..
{they're not sure what it's purpose was,
and are pretty sure it was never used!}

A little canyon-side dancing..

Chelsea, measuring Cliff Palace..

Spinning..

"Action Shot!"

Taking the Junior Ranger Pledge!

Mesa Verde..

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED it!!

Took off from here and drove to Moab..

Quick look at the Monticello Temple!
