A Tale of Procrastination.. {so what's new??}

I have a story to tell..

I have decided I miss just telling a story on my blog,
instead of just reporting on big "goings-on" here..

Sometimes I just have a story..

Those of you who know me, know I have to add a lot of detail when I tell a story..

This is my nice way of saying, bear with me, this could take a while..

{and also, in the interest of full disclosure
(apparently) I am showing a couple
incredibly unflattering photos of myself}

To {sorta} quote a non-Disney movie,
This story has many layers..
Like an onion..

{that ^^ is for you, Brother Lifferth}

Also, if you know me well, you know I have a procrastination problem..

Let's get on with the story, shall we?

I am living in fear of being pulled over right now..

Don't get me wrong, I don't speed, I don't run red lights, I don't tailgate, etc..

I get pulled over for random stuff..

"Fix-it" stuff..

Usually expired license plates..

I have a story from November 1999.. ?

My best friend Tara was in town..

from Australia..

We were reliving our glory days,
doing some late-night Christmas shopping..

We were heading home,
and as I turned in to a turn lane on University Avenue,
a policeman quickly changed lanes and was now right behind me..

I had a tiny panic attack and said to Tara -
"Great, my license plates are expired"

"..and come to think of it, so is my Driver's License"

Yes, I got pulled over and got a "fix-it" ticket to update these 2 problems..

Embarrassing..

Luckily, I was with my best friend, right??

Are you seeing where this is heading??

Fast forward to October 2010..

The family was hopping on a plane to Disney World..

When I was going through the security line,
the guard remarked that my driver's license would be expiring in a couple of weeks..

A tiny part of me thought,
I should get that renewed soon..

Ah, good intentions..

Fast forward to Wednesday, August 24, 2011..

I was laying in bed,
going over a mental list I was making,
since I would be going out of town in a couple days..

I suddenly realized..
{you know what I'm going to say, right?}
Driver's license.
Crap.
I got on Delta.com. Yep.
Valid driver's license.

{photo of my non-valid driver's license}
{so glad it was taken at my heaviest I've ever been..
including being pregnant}
{they punched holes in it at the DMV.. why?}

I got online to see what I'd need to get ready so I could get my license renewed the next day.

They recently changed the requirements in Utah:
Birth Certificate
Marriage License {for women, proof of legal last name}
Social Security Card
2 recent bills {proof of address}

Seriously? ..what a pain..

I got up the next morning and started locating all of the necessary paperwork..

I couldn't find my Social Security card..

Now, I'm thinking, whew! at least it's not my Birth Certificate or Marriage License! Since both of those occurred in Boise, I'd need to be there to get those..

I just need to go get a new Social Security card..
A pain, but not bad..

or so I thought..

To get a new Social Security card you need:
{my issues in red}

Documents to prove the identity of the applicant (US citizen):

One of the following is required:

  • US driver's license {the whole problem}
    Tip: A certified copy of a driver's license can often be obtained by visiting the office that issued the original license, such as a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Call them first to make sure they will provide a certified copy, and to find out what you need to bring to get one.
  • US state-issued non-driver identity card {same problem}
  • US passport {nope}

In some cases, other documents may be accepted such as:

  • US military identity card {nope}
  • Certificate of Naturalization {obviously not}
  • employee identity card {haven't had a job within the required 2 years}
  • certified copy of medical record (clinic, doctor, or hospital) {again, visit w/in 2 years}
  • health insurance card (not a Medicare card) {needs to have SSN.. mine doesn't}
  • Medicaid card (not a Medicare card) {nope}
  • school identity card {umm, nope. Again, within 2 years}
  • other school record maintained by the school {ditto}
  • For young children, a final adoption decree or medical record maintained by the medical provider {obviously not}

As I went up to the window of the SS office,
the guy was super nice,
and called me one of "those people"

He gave me a "temporary" SS card
to help me get my Driver's License..

So, I head to the DMV..

We have an Express DMV in Provo,
not super far from my house..

I was hopeful that I could go here,
but in all honesty,
I knew deep in my heart it wouldn't work out for me..

Now, there's a guy that works at the DMV who lives in my old ward,
First, he gave me a bad time for having such an expired license,
{and informed me that I would need to go to the main DMV
because it had been more than 6 months..}

Then, he insisted {with some expletives}
that there was some form Davy would have that would get me my SSN easily.

I headed home to look for this "form" we had,
and called Davy to ask where it would be..

I can't remember the name of this form,
but Davy looked it up,
and apparently it is a form if you are self-employed..

Davy isn't self-employed..

So I'd gone home for no reason..

I quickly ate some lunch,
then headed to north Orem..

About 25ish minutes from my home..

Now, we all know,
there's no such thing as a quick trip to the DMV..

When my name was finally called,
I was told I'd have to take the written test..

Oh good..

{I got 100%}

I was then bestowed my loverly temporary license.

Please, be kind..

{I can't believe I'm posting this}

{wow.. just don't even ask what I'm doing, because I can't answer that}

To make this story even more awesome,
are you noticing the expiration date??
It's tomorrow!!

Why did I think it was only good for 60 days??

When I do think about finishing this process,
I always assume I'm starting over,
so I've been in no hurry..

{unfortunately I happen to know the DMV is closed on Fridays,
so I couldn't have done it today anyway}

Now, remember,
I told you how I'm worried about getting pulled over?

There is a reason..

It has to do with this little baby:

That ^^ my friends,
is a replacement turn signal bulb..

My driver's side front signal is out..

This is a HUGE pain..

I never realized how often I turn left unprotected..

The worst place?

A place I turn left almost daily..

When I take/pick up the girls from dance..

The worst part is the studio is directly across
from the main entrance to the high school parking lot..

I tried to draw you a map to show the blockage..

and me with no signal..

Now, you see that I own a replacement bulb..

There's a story to why I own that, too,
but too make a long story a teensy bit shorter,

I'll skip that..

I'm going to Google instructions on fixing it myself..

Wish me luck..

Pray I get around to it before I get a ticket..

Thanks..

The awesome part is, (apparently) you have to do all this whether its expired or not!!

(been totally wishing you were around to go to WW with)

I used to be one of "those people", but I have since become a responsible citizen. A little advice, if you don't get any tickets, they will just send you a new license (you may have to sign a paper and mail it back). And you can ask to see your picture; if you don't like it,they will take another one.
